A gunman has been killed in a shootout with police at a Walmart store in Indiana, according to police.

Evansville Police say they heard reports of a shooting at the store located on South Red Bank Road at 9:59 p.m. on Thursday. When police arrived on scene, the suspect fired at officers, who returned fire and killed him. The gunman's identity has yet to be disclosed.

One person, reported to be a woman, was shot and wounded in the gun battle. She was taken to a local hospital, but her condition is not known.

Breann Boswell, an anchor at 14 News, said the shooter may have been an employee of the Walmart, but this has not been confirmed. She tweeted: "Breaking: Active shooter at west side Walmart in Evansville. Avoid the area."

In a follow up tweet, she added: "Male suspect fired multiple times at officers. Officers fired back and the suspect is deceased.

"Witness say it could've been an employee. One female victim confirmed.

"EPD officials are saying that there could be more victims, people ran out. If you were injured call police."

It’s so sad that shootings seem typical, normal almost. These are the incidents that change people’s lives forever. It hits you different when it’s at home. Tonight, the shooting at the Evansville Walmart was scary.

On a more personal note, she tweeted about the frequency of shootings in public areas.

"It's so sad that shootings seem typical, normal almost. These are the incidents that change people's lives forever.

"It hits you different when it's at home. Tonight, the shooting at the Evansville Walmart was scary."

Police have given no motive for the shooting. No officers were injured in the shootout, according to a CNN report.

Speaking to 14 News, Evansville Police Sergeant Anna Gray gave more details about what happened. "Officers were on scene very quickly, went right into Walmart. We were given a description of the suspect. Officers then began to look for the suspect."

She added that the suspect would fire at officers before running away while in the store.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Noah Robinson, whose officers also responded to the shooting, noted a change in police tactics when dealing with shooters since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

"Immediately, we assembled a team with the Evansville Police Department, and began to look for the threat," 14 News quoted him as saying.

"You may recall that decades ago, the Columbine model, that came across—when you secure a scene and wait for reinforcements to contain a situation.

"That's no longer a model we practice. If there's active gunfire, we immediately go to the threat and neutralize that threat, to minimize the loss of life," he added.

In a statement obtained by 14 News, Walmart said: "The entire Walmart family is shocked by the senseless violence that occurred at our Evansville store, and our hearts are with our associate at this time. As we learn more, we'll do everything we can to support our associates as they cope with this tragedy."

Newsweek has contacted the Evansville Police Department and Walmart for comment.

It is the third shooting in or around a Walmart store in recent weeks. Three people were shot in the parking lot outside a Chicago Walmart in early January, while two people were shot following an altercation inside a Walmart in Mobile, Alabama, in late December.
